Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) is a fetal serum protein that is produced during fetal life and begins to decrease after birth, reaching levels observed in adults after 18 months. It may be increased in liver cancer or germ cell tumors of egg yolk origin. Therefore, it can be used to determine the stage of these tumors and determine treatment effectiveness, and can also be used as a screening test for liver cancer in the East, where the prevalence of liver cancer is high.
