Typhoid is a disease caused by infection with Salmonella typhi. It is an acute systemic infectious disease that causes symptoms such as fever and abdominal pain. It is common in children and young adults. Typhoid is transmitted when patients with Salmonella typhoid eat food or water contaminated with feces or from carriers. It is also transmitted by the presence of typhoid bacteria on food that the patient cooks. It is also transmitted by crustaceans or fish and shellfish (especially oysters) grown in contaminated water, or fruit with excrement. The incubation period for typhoid is relatively long, ranging from 1 to 7 weeks. In the beginning, a high fever, chills, and headaches appear, but after a few days, abdominal pain and red spots on the chest often appear. In some cases, diarrhea occurs due to symptoms of enteritis for several days before a high fever occurs. However, 10 to 38% of patients also develop constipation.
